KilluaGon #1 (My Hero!)

Around 11:30am today I looked up from answering email, noticed it was 11:30am, and thought damn. When's the last time I went to that GEOSCI lecture anyway?

On the fic front: oh, look. More gen. *headdesk* I have to get into the habit of mindlessly churning these things out. And thank you for correcting me, Certain Persons!

Title: My Hero!
Series: Hunter x Hunter
Pairing: I was supposed to be writing KilluaGon?
Genre: Action/Adventure! What's the hxh equilivent of a casefic? Jobfic? Huntfic? o_O
Rating: G. *cries*
30_kisses Theme: 13 (Excessive Chain)

The prison room was lit only by torches, baleful malignant ones that produced almost more smoke than light and flickered violently with the draft. The walls, floor, and presumably ceiling--who could tell through all the smoke and atmospheric gloom?--were made of rough stone formed into large slabs. Slight irregularities made the room more like a cave than a civilized dungeon. In the far corner a young girl was huddled against the cold and the damp. Her hands were tied together in front of her and she was bent over them, sniffing piteously but otherwise making no move to free herself. Surrounded by pools of darkness, the torchlight illuminating her artfully disarrayed blond hair, she was a model of tragedy.

In the near corner a tall and villainous but otherwise unremarkable man was bent over a large desk, scribbling notes and giggling to himself. The desk was the only substantial piece of funiture in an otherwise bare room. It was covered in incomprehensible-yet-sinister diagrams; the man was dressed in embroidered black with glinting heavy boots, a typical petty evil overlord. Only the sounds of his pen across the paper, his mad soft cackling, the girl's quietly artistic misery and, somewhere, the regular drip of water disturbed the silence.

Killua, meanwhile, was shacked to the wall pretending to be in pain. This wasn't terribly difficult: during his short life he'd had almost as much practice in faking pain as he'd had in being shackled to walls. The handcuffs were low enough that he could actually stand in them, albeit on the tips of his toes. He was, at most, mildly uncomfortable.

Uncomfortable and BORED. Hadn't he seen a B movie like this once?

"At last, my master work is complete!" the man exclaimed. Killua rolled his eyes. Discretely, of course: when the man turned to face him, he saw nothing in Killua's face but blank horror. "With this, I can easily conquer the whole Western Seaboard! Would you like to see? Would you? You want to see, right?"

Killua shook his head. What was with this guy? He was not only unoriginal, overdramatic, and badly dressed, but (probably) the most pathetically attention-seeking evil villain in the history of evil villains. He sucked at torture, too, or he'd have known to fasten the shackles a bit higher.

"I'll pass."

"Oh, don't be such a spoilsport!" The man pouted like a little girl, then brightened. "I know! If you don't want to see, you can feel! My very first test subject, yay~!" He advanced with a fixed grin, his "master plan" crumpled in one hand and a wicked looking needle--where had that come from?--in the other. It glistened with what couldn't be good news.

What to do? Killua was immune to most poisons, but something about the set-up was bothering him. It was wrong, somehow…. the generic-ness of the dungeon, the way the man was smiling, the needle. The whole thing reeked of Nen. But what kind? And how was it being used?

Killua's dilemma and man's advance both ended with the abrupt explosion of the far wall. Killua could easily pick out Gon's silhouette through the smoke. He stood where stone had been only a few moments before, grinning amidst a shower of a rock dust and still-flaming debris. Killua ignored the shrieking girl (having picked the wrong wall to cry against, she was now scrambling frantically away from the wreckage) to focus on Gon. He almost smiled back.

"Killua! I found it!" Gon exclaimed. He waved a small gold box, inlaid with what might have been semiprecious stones. The thing was practically glowing with Nen; it was the real thing, no doubt about it.

Killua casually broke the restraints holding him to the wall. "Good," he said, stepping forward. He disposed of the would-be evil overlord in one easy motion, a quick jab to the neck before the man could overcome his stunned paralysis. He immediately collapsed. Killua massaged his wrists-damn, he'd been chained up for a while. "What took you so long?"

"This place has some really strange traps! Just wait til you hear, you probably won't believe…"

"My hero!" the girl interrupted. She flung herself at Gon, who looked started but obligingly shifted the box to his other hand so that he could catch her before she fell.

"Oh, are you a prisoner here? Here, let me untie you." He tried to get at the knots binding her wrists, but was thwarted by the way she kept trying to embrace him. He glanced over at Killua: help me, the look seemed to say. Killua, secretly amused, decided to take his time.

"You're so cool! And smart and brave! I bet the half-manticore guards didn't even slow you down~! Did you get to the triangle lasers? No one's ever gotten to those! Tell me! Tell me tell me tell me!"

"Eh," Gon said. "It's wasn't a big deal. Could you stop moving for a second?"

The girl wasn't having any of it. "Don't be such a spoilsport!" she exclaimed. "And now your reward - a kiss for the victor!" She leaned forward.

Time suddenly stopped for Killua. The generic dungeon. Needles that appeared out of nowhere to glint in nonexistent light. The excessively girly evil overlord. The way he'd momentarily frozen when the wall blew in...

Don't be such a spoilsport!

"Gon!" he said. "Don't! She's a manipula-"

"Don't what?" Gon asked. He'd punched the girl away from him and was now carefully examining the box for scratches. "Don't let her kiss me? I already figured that one out. The girl's the one behind everything, right?"

"How did you know?" Killua asked. The typicalness of the dungeon had been his first clue, and the girlishness of the overlord his second, but Gon didn't share his sensibilities and couldn't have known the rest of it. So how had he figured it out?

"She asked about the triangle lasers." Gon said. "If no one else ever made it that far, how else could she have known about them?"

Ah. That made sense. Killua hit him in the back of the head. "Stupid! Maybe this guy," he pointed to the still-unconscious "evil overlord", who was now lying next to an equally unconscious little girl with brown hair, "told her about them!"

Gon rubbed his head and looked remorseful. "You didn't have to hit me! I didn't think of that!"

Killua snorted. "Obviously. You're just lucky you were right."

Gon just smiled. Killua was not going to smile back. He wasn't. He was not going… ah, damn it. "Come on, we have a reward to collect," he said, grumpily. He put his hands behind his head--he had an image to maintain, after all.

Gon just smiled and followed him out.

"Is it really ok to leave them like that?"

"Why shouldn't we?"

"What if they wake up and cause more trouble?"

"We already have what we came for. Does it matter?"

Loving it all the way! :P

Uncomfortable and BORED. Hadn't he seen a B movie like this once?
The thing that drives me wild about Killua's characterization is that though he seems all cool and cocky, he's still such a kid and his thoughts are inevitably childish at times. You keep that alive, and I love you for it. <3

Gon just smiled. Killua was not going to smile back. He wasn't. He was not going… ah, damn it.

Hehehehe, that line made me smile. Killua is so helpless in front of Gon, it's by a hair's breadth that he avoids flinging his assassin mien out the window.

More KilluGon from ya soon, I hope? You make me wanna watch my measly HxH collection again...*sighs* maybe I'll go do that...

.. You comment really fast. :0 (or maybe i just took too long with meticulously weeding out the extra superlatives in my FB. whoops.)

Killua/Gon fans unite! <--did not know you liked it, :000

meticulously weeding out the extra superlatives in my FB
lololol. I've been lightheaded all day today, maybe I'm typing too fast. Most times when I happen on my comments again, I think, what the hell was I writing.

Killua/Gon fans unite! <--did not know you liked it,
Yes, I find I relate to them more than I do to Leorio/Kurapica...I...don't want to analyze that.

Twenty-nine more to KilluGon to go! Plus according to the comm rules I have to do at least one a month. So, yes, more. Perhaps I'll die first--it takes me sooo long to write these things.

Thank you! Heh, those're some of my favorite lines too. And I've also been thinking of rewatching the anime, but then I'd have to redownload, and last time it took a week, and arg! Maybe I'll just go through the manga a few more times.

(Why oh why do I not have a HxH icon?)

You say this has seen no editing, but mechanics-wise it's actually not that bad. Maybe I noticed the occasional awkward clause, but overall your story - the teenaged-feel of the humor, the ins-and-outs of the characterization (really loved Killua's capitulation at the end -- predictability doesn't lessen any of the raburabu omg), the execution of the idea (ebil kawaii magical girl wot) - was really satisfying / entertaining. I mean, it made me laugh, it made me start (with surprise -- the story twist isn't that ingenuous, but in the right hands it develops rather nicely xD), it made the Killua/Gon fangirl in me squeak, and really you haven't even done anything with this pair yet. Except maybe establish + reinforce the canon-backed part of their relationship.

Ahh, man, I'm really glad you decided on Gon & Killua for your 30 kisses. Can you tell how huge a fan am I, from the size of my comment? and from me, who hasn't been around in weeks! I remember first getting into HxH, and having the crazy insane fangirl urges, and tearing through FF.net and the LJ comms and googling for fic sites, but coming up with nothing...so I'm glad this pairings is in one hands (I mean, not to risk sounding corny. absolutely not.). Am really eagerly looking forward to more plz rite moor faster omg PLZ *begs*. /gush XD;;;

Oh yes and thank you! For being a fellow fan and for your comments which are v. v. flattering.
Feb. 4th, 2005 03:23 am (UTC)
Wah! Killua and Gon! And they're just like they are in the series, that is to say, OMG so cute. :D Killua is perfect, I love how droll he is - commenting on the B-movie-esque quality of it all while he's shackled to a wall. Heh.

And at the end - ah, damn. He smiled. That's perfect. Man, I can't wait for the next 29.
Feb. 4th, 2005 03:55 am (UTC)
Thanks! My favorite thing about HxH is actually how light it all is even when it has every right to be dark.

Glad you liked it!

gratuitous comment. o_O
Man, I am seriously going to have to start reading HxH, just to be able to catch these fics. From a non-fandom standpoint, sounds good. :D The beginning seems a bit overly dramatic to the point where I'm not sure if you're deliberately mocking the tragic fairytale angle or not. (I think it's because of that one line, actually. It's like a slap in the face with the obviousness. Or you could introduce it like that, a sort of "It looked something from a fairy tale" beginning. Or not. *may be poking at something perfectly fine, is not coherent enough to really tell*) Also, I don't know if it's just a Killua way of speaking or whatnot, but he says "She a manipu..." Was that intentional?

Muchlove for the Killua POV and I think it says a lot that I can glean (Hehe, fun word.) a lot of his character from the fic. Gon a little less so, but enough that it's fun to read. :D

And I'm beginning to think that the day you write pairingfic-- gay pairingfic-- is the day that I do something crazy like streak my neighborhood or something. Upon reading this, I had a sudden revelation that you are pretty much the ultimate non-pairer upper. So, I've come to the conclusion that you should write something soon to rid me of that idea. It is simply The Only Way. *nods solemnly*

*cough* Mindlessly churning out fic? What an utterly foreign concept...

*hijacks comment*
Killua tries to warn Gon with the "She's a manipu..." In HxH-verse there are different types of nen-users, nen being the equivalent of YYH ki, or just plain magic powaa. The girl's a manipulation type, and subdivided (onyahbear?) was just clueing the reader in on the mini-plot ... or that's how I interpret it.

Re: *hijacks comment*
Yup yup. It needs a-dash-not-an-elipse, I think: dashes are for when you're interupted halfway, elipses are more for trailing off...

(Either is fine.)
Feb. 4th, 2005 05:26 am (UTC)
Re: *hijacks comment*
Er, I was actually refering to the "she a" part, as opposed to the "she's a." XD The magical aspect was pretty evident. ^^

Re: *hijacks comment*
Sorry, my mistake. ^^;
Feb. 4th, 2005 05:07 am (UTC)
Re: gratuitous comment. o_O
^_^ (If there's ever a fandom you want to get me to try, believe me I will. Just say the word.)

Ah yes, the see-not-tell school of writing. T_T it was a question of outright judgement or try to get by on description. I'll have to fix that.

Killua has the most awesome character ever. He is really, really complex and well thought out. Gon is more typical spikey-haired shonen action hero, but he has his momments. Most notaby, he is unexpectedly shrewd undereneath the innocence.

I did a very WAFFy Tsuzuki/Hisoka once? XD (Sasuke/Hinata, man, Sasuke/Hinata. I keep waiting for a plot to emerge, but it has yet to happen and until it does those drabbles will be nothing but gratuitous pairing angst. *nods*)

Feb. 4th, 2005 06:05 am (UTC)
Love~ The HxH section is full of so much trash, I'm so glad to see Killua/Gon as one of your pairings (and thus supplying good fanfiction to squee over enjoy. Your story was a very fun read, you did very well with portraying Killua as his usual smart-ass self.

... Lying next to an equally unconscious little with brown hair...
From the "unconscious little" part, did you mean to have "girl" inbetween there? ^^;
Feb. 4th, 2005 06:17 am (UTC)
Why yes, I did. Thannk you! And also for your comment! KilluaGon is so, so much love.
Feb. 4th, 2005 06:22 am (UTC)
Cute fic, and totally in character! I'm so happy to have come across a HxH that's actually well written and entertaining! (I shudder to think about FF.net's HxH section...)
Feb. 4th, 2005 03:22 pm (UTC)
Thanks! I've never really understood why FF.net's HxH section is so bad: it's a good series, right? I has a lot of fans, right? And it lends itself fairly well to fic, right? So why is there so much crap?! Arg.
Feb. 4th, 2005 05:04 pm (UTC)
Tell me about it... 90% of the entries to the HxH section are variations of:
Kurapka realizes his one tru luv is Neonand he must protect her alwaysfrom evil Kurorro!!!!"

.... >_< *shudders*
Feb. 8th, 2005 03:07 am (UTC)
You. You write my Hunter x Hunter OTP. Well, no less. I love you.
Feb. 8th, 2005 07:23 am (UTC)
Ah ha, thank you. I'm glad you didn't think it was too...PG. XD
Feb. 8th, 2005 11:48 am (UTC)
Who cares whether it's PG or otherwise... any KilluaGon interaction makes me happy. THANK YOU :D

You're welcome!
Feb. 8th, 2005 01:54 pm (UTC)

Thanks! ^^;; Three guesses who my favorite character is (first two don't count).

Shalnark and Feitan? XD

I just borrowed this from sage_3, though.
Feb. 9th, 2005 01:37 am (UTC)

Why are they so cute? WHY?

I love this. It's beautifully IC and I cannot wait for more!
Feb. 9th, 2005 01:47 am (UTC)
I ASK MYSELF THIS QUESTION EVERY DAY. A trained killer and a kid with relative morals shouldn't be so adorable. AND YET THEY ARE.

*blushes* Thanks.
Apr. 27th, 2005 12:50 am (UTC)
I love your stuff, read it on FF.net. Awesome
Apr. 27th, 2005 01:27 am (UTC)

Thank you! ff.net isn't letting me edit or remove stories at the moment, so I haven't been posting anything there. Maybe now I'll finally get aroung to sending the site maintainers that email. Eh heh.
Apr. 29th, 2005 10:06 pm (UTC)
Gon just smiled. Killua was not going to smile back. He wasn't. He was not going… ah, damn it.

I love this...
